Lost: Whatever Happened, Happened

Published by niraj at 3:34 pm under Episode Reviews Edit This

Great, another Kate-centric episode. I have no qualms about admitting that Kate is one of my least favorite characters on Lost. She’s a coward, manipulative, treats people like garbage, and doesn’t even think about things 90% of the time before she acts. Sure, she’s incredibly attractive, but wouldn’t you prefer somebody more innocuous and genuine like Juliet? The fact that Kate treats poor ol’ Jack so badly should be reason enough to hate her. /end rant

Personal bias aside, this week’s episode was not spectacular in the slightest. In my opinion, at any rate, I was able to predict Kate meeting with Cassidy and Clementine per Sawyer’s request, as well as Kate leaving Aaron with Claire’s mom. I’m not saying you’re an idiot if you didn’t figure these things out, but I would not be surprised if many people did. The idea that Kate gave Ben a blood transfusion as a result of her guilt for leaving Aaron behind was laughable at best. Kate is concerned with one thing: Kate. The idea that she could change is seemingly instilled through the devotion she showed Aaron. However, I find that this is completely undermined by the fact that she leaves Aaron.  Granted, Claire did appear to Kate and tell her not to take Aaron back, but I don’t feel as though that’s Kate’s reasoning. Kate left Aaron just like she left every place she had ever been: she’s incapable of stability. Hence the constant shifting between Jack and Sawyer.

While I’m on the subject of Jack, I was pleased when he told off Kate. When she remarked that she liked the old Jack better, his response of “But you didn’t like the old me, Kate” without so much as a frown on his face was just perfect. I think that Jack has had his heart broken enough times by Kate, and I think he finally realizes what she is. I was also proud of Jack for not agreeing to operate on Ben; after all, why would he want to do so? Aside from those moments, my other highlights of the episode were the conversation between Miles and Hurley about time travel. I think the two characters provide much needed comic relief, as it prevents the show from becoming “too” serious. It has gotten to the point where whenever Hurley is on the scene, you just start laughing because you know something funny is going to be said.

The whole Ben situation seemed to convenient for me. Hurley brought up the point as to why Ben didn’t recognize Sayid when they had him captured in the hatch. When Richard said “if he comes with us, he won’t be the same. He won’t remember any of this, and he’ll lose his innocence,” I said to myself “well isn’t that just convenient?”  It seemed to me like the writers had realized that they had created a problem with the Ben-survivors relationship, and this seemed almost like a retcon to me. Granted, it was interesting to hear that Richard doesn’t answer to either Charles (Widmore) or Ellie (Eloise Hawking?), but rather follows his own set of rules. This makes sense when one considers how he was helping Locke despite Ben’s wishes in season 3. I was also curious as to the purpose of the temple, as we’ve heard/seen it several times now without there being any specific indicator as to its function. It’s fair to say that the smoke monster has something to do with it, as it has been described as a “security system,” but the important question of what the monster actually is and why it exists still has yet to be made known (hopefully next week?).

But overall, what did we learn through this episode this week? Nothing really. I suppose it could have explained Ben’s infatuation with Juliet as she looks “just like her” (The Other Woman, Season 4) . That could reference to Ben’s mother, as they are somewhat similar, but maybe it simply means that he has some memories of Juliet that weren’t erased by whatever Richard did to him? Overall though, this episode essentially had two minutes of information in a half hour timeslot. Hopefully next week’s episode will make up for this one.

Rating: 4 out of 10.

 Until next time.
